Ready to leave Dutch Harbor, AK

We have only hours before we will set sail towards the Bering Sea. The ship loads supplies.

Last minute shopping is underway. Articles reach from toothpaste, CD’s, cookies, candies, postcards, Dutch Harbor souvenirs to Velcro tape for securing things on the desk and walls during heavy seas.

USCGC Healy ready to sail

In the afternoon we had our first official science meeting. The HOTRAX (Healy & Oden Transarctic Expedition) expedition has two Co-chief scientists, Dr. B. Coakley from the (University Fairbanks) and Dr. Dennis Darby (Old Dominion University). Dr. Bernard Coakley is responsible for the seismic work on the ship and is the researcher that answers your questions on the TREC Webpage. Dr. Dennis Darby is responsible for the sediment coring. In addition we have scientist that observe and study mammals and sea ice onboard.

Dr. Coakley: “We are an excellent group of people on the best polar research ship of the US. During our cruise we will see things nobody else has ever seen before. “
In the evening almost everybody who was not needed on the USCGC Healy went into town having a good time talking about the upcoming events Remember, we will be at sea for two months. When we came back our ship greeted us ready to sail.
