biggrin.gif Hi Bob,
My name is Kaimi and i am in middle school. I was wondering, where in the lake was the sediment you looked at deposited? Would it be towards the middle of the lake or would it collect all around or maybe just along the edges of the lake? Thank you for considering my question.
Kaimi

Hi Kaimi,
What a great question!!!! We have sediment traps set up all around the lake. As the sediment leaves the mouth of the river a lot of things determine where it is going to be deposited. When the river is flowing very fast the sediments are deposited farther out in the lake. If the river is moving slowly, the sediment gets deposited right near the mouth of the river. Wind also seems to play a role. The plume of sediment can go to the right of the mouth of the river on some days when the wind is blowing in that direction or the left when the wind is blowing in that direction. We also set the traps at different depths. Thanks for the question.

Hi Robert Oddo,
I go to Whatcom Day Academy and am in Middle School. After reading the questions and the entry I was wondering why the sediment traps had to sit for all Winter? Is there a reason for that?

Have a good time!

Hi Chris,
Sediment gets deposited in the fall and winter also. Some blows from the tundra onto the ice in the winter and then get deposited in the water when the ice melts. Also we call them winter traps even though they are in the lake from when we leave the lake in August until the next July when we collect the sediments from them. Hope that answers your question. Thanks

All the people that conducted these studies are now returning to their universities and will be analyzing their data in the fall. This data will be presented at various scientific meetings in the spring and hopefully written up for publication. Last year many of the researchers presented at the Northeastern Geological Society of America meeting. Thanks for the question.
