Hi Amos,

Banding is the process of putting small metal bands on the legs of birds. Snow geese, in this case! The bands have an identification number on them as well as a phone number to call when a person finds a bird with a band.

Information on where and when birds with bands are found help scientists to better understand the migration patterns of birds.

The snow geese on the North Slope have been increasing in numbers, and in greater numbers than can be accounted for by reproduction alone. So, finding out where birds from here migrate to in the winter, and where birds caught here wearing bands came from may help to answer the question of the increase in the population.

If you have any more questions, please ask!
