Safety Training and Orientation in Fairbanks April 28-May 1
All 7 of the TREC teachers met on Friday April 29th with the staff of ARCUS. I think this was the longest I ever flew for a weekend meeting, however, the trip was very informative and useful. We familiarized ourselves with using satellite phones and became familiar with the software that we will use to communicate with everyone with. We learned the how communications can be tricky in the Arctic since the satellites pop up and then down over the horizon. We learned about some of the Arctic people and learned one of their dance. I learned what a klutz I could be. Here I am dancing(notice I can’t tell right from left) We went through a day and a half of safety training where we learned some of the dangers of the arctic. We learned some basic first aid as well shelter building techniques, net construction and ways to build a fire. All in all this was a very informative weekend. It was really nice to put some names together with faces and get to know some of the people I will be working with. Net building Making a splint Body parts (Hopefully I won’t have to deal with the real thing) |
