Science technique question - why are core liners cut longitudinally before drilling instead of after?

As for the core tubes, I probably need to explain that a little more. Those liners are used for a multi-core sample, not a single one. Also, those liners are what the sample is extruded into AFTER the core is brought to the surface. Cutting the liners lengthwise before the core is put into them makes cutting the core easier, and prevents contamination. If you cut it after, some of the plastic cuttings might get into the sediment, and that's not a good thing Also, you get a cleaner and easier cut before hand, so the liners can be reused several times.
