Description: A large rock in the Bering Sea is the abandoned home of a very few native Alaskans. The captain swung the ship in for a closer look at the interesting features of this little island. At first glance King Island is not much more than a 4 square mile rock in the Bering Sea, several miles off the coast of Alaska. On closer look, a small, abandoned village teeters on the edge of the steep cliffs.

Description: I was able to purchase this piece of carved bowhead whale baleen from a St. Lawrence Island Yupik hunter that visited the Healy. The hairs of this type of baleen feel similar to the hairs of a horse’s tail. A bowhead whale uses its baleen to filter feed by straining out zooplankton (copepods, euphausids, and amphipods) from near the surface of the water.

Description: 5/23/06: The Latin name for a bearded seal is Erignathus barbatus. It is classified as a mammal in the suborder of carnivorous marine mammals called pinnipeds. It is in the family of earless pinnipeds called phocids. (Phocids have ears, but no outer ear structure like sea lions.) They are closely related to sea lions and walruses, which are in different families of the same order.

Description: Transmitters like this one are used by wildlife biologists to track and learn more about the location and diving behavior of marine mammals. This transmitter is smaller and lighter than the camera that I used to take the photo. It has an antenna that extends a few centimeters beyond the edge of the picture.

Description: 5/23/06 – Gay Sheffield is a wildlife biologist who works for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. She spends much of her time on trips like this one to collect data. She was telling an animated tale of her experiences in the field to Mikhail when I took this picture.

Description: 5/23/06 – Not only was it awesome to capture photos of the Healy from the air, it was equally awesome to capture photos of her from the water in the landing craft. I feel very lucky to have been able to see the Healy from this vantage point.

I scaled the ship!

Description: 5/23/06 – The landing craft is actually lowered down from the deck to the water by a crane located on the fantail of the ship. I had to climb down the ladder you see in this picture in order to board the landing craft. I held on for dear life and took it one step at a time. What an adventure just to board the boat!

Description: 5/14/06 - It was so nice of Gay to let me try on her parka. The fur around the hood is from wolf, while the rest of the fur on the bottom trim, sleeves, and inside is from wolf, wolverine, and lamb. The hand made parka was very lightweight, comfortable, and very warm.

Description: 5/14/06 - When I first met Gay Sheffield in Gambell, she was wearing this beautiful handmade parka. Later, on the ship, I was admiring it and she offered to let me try it on. It slid so smoothly over my head and the fur inside felt so soft. I got very warm after just a few minutes.

Description: 5/24/06 - This is probably as close as I'll get to King Island. The captain steered us in a little closer because even he was curious about the island.

Who is that?

Description: 5/22/06 - Mrs. Barlow or Miss Healy? Tim Sullivan, the navigator, took one of the life rings down and said that it was a great photo op, so I put it on and Patty snapped a photo for me. Silly me - Miss Healy would never leave his stateroom without mascara or lipstick.

Description: 5/22/06 - I often stand on the bridge and stare out at the sea in silent reflection. (This picture was taken at 12:30 a.m., by the way.) My reflections are occasionally interrupted – in a good way – by a doubt. Am I really here? This whole experience has been surreal. I can’t believe that I have been given the chance to be here on the Healy in the Bering Sea. So, I have to act like a tourist and take that occasional novelty photo of myself to remind myself later that I really was here. You know you all have one of these where you stretch the camera as far away from yourself as your arm will go… I am sure I could easily ask someone to take my picture, but then it wouldn’t hold its place as that kind of novelty photo, would it?
