Ute Kaden will join Bernie Coakley and a group of U.S., Swedish, and Norwegian investigators for a trans-Arctic Ocean research cruise on board the U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Healy. The Healy will meet with the Swedish icebreaker Oden to transit across the North Pole. While on board, the team will collect an integrated geophysical data set including bathymetry, sub-bottom profiles, and periodic cores to create a cross-basin sedimentary transect; the cores will be intensively studied for what they may reveal concerning the climate of the last 10,000 years. These data are critical to understanding the recent history of the Arctic Ocean and arctic climate and developing our ability to make predictions about climate change. Seismic reflection and refraction data will enable study of the history of the ridges and basins that make up the Arctic.

Ute Kaden teaches physics, math, and physical geography at Homer Hanna High School in Brownsville, Texas. Ute is currently working on her dissertation topic: "The effects of technology-rich and inquiry based science education on attitudes of Hispanic students toward science and considering a carrier in science and/or engineering." Ute is determined to establish technology-rich and inquiry-based science lessons in the classroom and is dedicated to the design of distance education courses and multimedia for science.

Dr. Bernard Coakley is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. Since its inception in 1993, Dr. Coakley has been involved in the SCICEX geophysics program. These cruises through the Arctic on US Navy submarines have been used to collect data for various science applications. Dr. Coakley believes this opportunity for teachers to join these research expeditions is important because " …teachers deserve to have strong positive experiences outside the classroom to invigorate their enthusiasm for what they teach and help them keep up to date on new developments and ideas."

On a recent trip to Barrow, Alaska, Dr. Coakley gave research presentations to high school students and second graders, an experience which he enjoyed and inspired him to learn more about structuring cutting-edge scientific information for the various grade levels. Following the TREC expedition, Dr. Coakley is interested in helping develop curriculum with the participating teacher.
